Grizzly 20 - Sunday 12th March 2006 |
The 2006 Grizzly will be remembered for the rain and the freezing 3 degree Celsius easterly gale. The race route had needed to be revised after a cliff fall near Weston Mouth had made this section unsafe reducing the overall race distance to 18.5 miles. After 24 hours of intermittent rain before the race, the course conditions were always going to be challenging. The runners at the front had the advantage of running over relatively ‘firm’ ground; the hundreds of runners who followed were running through churned up mud. Hills turned into mudslides making progress uphill difficult and in the dreaded bog itself, there were 12” deep foot holes coming down a steep descent into the thigh deep mud of the bog then followed by wading across the freezing cold thigh high waters of the river. 2,300 runners signed up to take part in the 2006 Grizzly, the exact numbers of runners starting the race is not known but there were 1,528 race finishers. The winner of the 2006 Grizzly was Adrian Mussett of the Colchester Harriers who finished the race in 2-12-46. The first female runner home was Heather Foundling-Hawker in 16th overall position with a time of 2-25-36. Full report and photos>> |

Yorkshire Vets Cross Country Championships, Bramley Park, Leeds - Sunday 5th February 2006 |
Report by Dave Ansell
Some excellent runs from all of us at Bramley Park, Leeds. Host club P&B did a great organising job, but humongous amounts of dog shit everywhere! There were 135 runners in the young vets race (35-49). Most of our team were towards the upper end of the age group but we still managed a decent 8th out of 14 complete teams;m hard as steel! I picked up the individual bronze (without realizing) in the M45 cat - well chuffed.

North of England Cross Country Championships, Blackburn - Saturday 28th January 2006full results |
This 12km race was held at Witton Park, Blackburn. Unlike last year when several Striders dropped out at the last minute, this year saw a 7 Striders compete the race and the team finish 40th out of 47 teams. The course comprised 1 small lap and 3 large laps; much more interesting than the course provided for the Yorkshire Championships earlier in the month. The terrain was varied with 2 steep hills, patches of thick mud, woodland and flat grass parkland: indeed a proper cross country course. However the going was much easier than when it was last held on this course in 200 when it was very muddy. Leeds City were the overall winners. |

Yorkshire Cross Country Championships, Rotherham - Saturday 14th January 2005full results |
For the second consecutive year Striders were able to enter a team in this prestigious championship race. The course was over three large, fairly flat, laps of Herringthorpe Park in Rotherham. The surface for this 12km race was still mostly firm even though it was the last race of a long day - the announcer even said "Good-bye and have a good journey home" whilst most of the men were still out on the course. 221 runners finished the senior race and the Striders team were placed 18th out of 22 teams, an improvement on last year when we were last! Once again the average age of the Striders team was high, not surprising given that most of us are veterans. More importantly, Striders continue to be represented at a wider level than just our local area, so again full credit to Michael for his efforts in putting the team together. |

New Year's Day Handover 5 - Sunday 1st Janaury 2006 full results |
Report by James Hunter
On a nice crisp New Year's day I turned up not really knowing what to expect but when someone told me to think of it like a compressed Huddersfield 10km or Eyam half marathon I then knew it was going to be tough. A solid 3 and a half mile up hill with no break was followed when you hit the top by a serious drop back down for the next mile and a half to the finish. A race that ensured that any alcohol left in the system from New Year's Eve is cleared out of the system. |
